How to have a great budget holiday in Madrid

My budget was so tight I did not feel allright when I visited Madrid on my last visit. It was tighter than a virgin!

But, I had a great time and really enjoyed myself in the city. How could it happen? What did I do? Read on and get my top tips on how to enjoy a great budget holiday in Madrid.

Retiro Park - A great place to drink cheap beers.

Retiro Park - A great place to drink cheap beers.

From the airport
Do not even consider taking a taxi into town from the airport, it will set you back at least €20. Go for the metro transport. Cheap and quick, it’s all good.

Food
I stuck to kebabs and tapas and did not spend anything more than a few euros to get my stomach filled.

Drinks
I admit, I did go to supermarkets, stock up on some beers and ham (serrano ham), then I headed for the Retiro park, and just sat down at a bench and enjoyed my drinks and food.

Real Madrid on the cheap
I just had to go to Santiago Bernabeau and watch Real Madrid play. Compared to the English Premier League, it isn’t so expensive to watch matches in Primera liga. If Real play against Sevilla, Athletico or Barcelona – the tickets will be very expensive, but when I visited they played against the small team of Almería and I got a ticket behind a goal for €25. Great match, Real won 3-0.

If you are really on a budget you can skip the match and just have a tour around the stadium during the day. I think it costs appx. €10 for a visit to the pitch, locker rooms and the Real Madrid museum.

Shopping
Madrid is a great city to be in if you want to do some serious shopping. Unfortunelately, because I did not have any serious money, I elected to stay away from Calle Augusto Figueroa, Barrio Salamanca and all the other great shopping districts in Madrid. I did venture out on a trip to the El Rastro flea market one Sunday morning though, I bought a beer glass, it did not cost me more than 2 euros.

OK, hope these words could inspire you to enjoy a budget holiday in Madrid. Look around the site for more hints and tips on how to survive Madrid on a limited budget. Remember, if your budget is tight – it’s all right!
