Getafe

In addition to Real and Atletico, Getafe is the third Primera division team from Madrid.

The football club Getafe formed in 1946 and following a tumultuous history of near successes at cracking the competitive top divisions actually went out of business in 1982.  After they were reformed, a string of victories and successes finally propelled the team into the ranks of Spain’s top division.

The home for all of Getafe’s games is the Coliseum Alfonso Perez.  With a capacity for 16,300 fans, this stadium while new is also considered small considering 1st division standards.  Ticket prices range depending on which side you wish to sit on (covered vs. uncovered vs. end) and are almost certainly available for all but the biggest games of the season.

The diehard supporters of Getafe are called the Marea Azul and encompass eighteen clubs and nearly twelve thousand individual associates.  Getafe’s success and prominence has spread throughout the world and certainly people of many different countries are counted among their ranks.

Getafe’s chief rival due to proximity has been Leganes.  This lasted for as long as the two clubs still remained on equal footing competitively.  As Getafe pulled away and worked up the division ladder the team has faced intense competition from Real Madrid, Barcelona, and also Valencia.

As Getafe has matured and grown competitively, so have its achievements with two runner-up spots in the Copa del Ray and a win in the Segunda Division B – Group 1 championship.  Notable accomplishments in the last decade include the cementing of the club as a bonafide 1st division team along with four top ten finishes, and two finishes in the top five.  With its qualification and participation in the UEFA Cup followed by a journey to the quarter-finals in the 2007/2008 season and with six seasons in La Liga, the future looks very bright for the rising star of Getafe.
