Flamenco

Spain has many a beautiful custom/stereotype, ranging from downing pitchers of delicious sangria to napping all afternoon (long live the siesta!). I encourage you to try them all to get a better understanding of Spain and what it’s all about. One typical facet of Spanish culture is, without a doubt, flamenco. The long, flowing polka-dot dresses, the twirl of the hands, the stomp of the feet: it’s art in motion like nothing you’ve ever seen before.
There is undoubtedly no shortage of flamenco tablaos all over the city, but the cover charge can be exorbitant. Not to worry! There is many a bar where you can check out a flamenco show and/or music for free (or almost nothing).
Why you should go
Because it’s a beautiful part of Spanish culture that is sure to make the hairs on your arms stand up.
Where
A bar called Cardamomo has shows on Wednesdays and Sundays (Calle Echegaray 15, Metro Sevilla, L2, Tel. 91 369 0757). Another bar on the same street, Los Gabrieles, is beautifully-decorated in homage to flamenco, and they have live music on Tuesdays (Calle Echegaray 17, Metro Sevilla, L2, Tel. 91 369 0757). La Solea, in La Latina, which is just a short walk, often has impromptu flamenco shows as the gypsies who perform in the tablaos head over after the show to party, and once they get some more alcohol in them, an inevitable and completely impromptu musical stomp stomp stomp often ensures (Calle Cava Baja 34, Metro La Latina, L5, Tel. 91 365 3308)
